A global network in peritoneal oncology

Peritoneal carcinomatosis is uncommon in any single centre. No hospital accrues enough cases on its own to answer the questions that matter, which is why this work is done as a network.

Took part in the academic exchange programme behind the creation of the IRCPSO. A week of work in Beijing with teams from five countries around one goal: advancing the treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis and laying the foundations of a global research network.

What came out of that week

  • Live international broadcast of three complex cytoreductive procedures — pseudomyxoma peritonei and diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma — with open discussion of surgical philosophies and HIPEC protocols across centres.
  • Keynote lectures from global leaders: Yutaka Yonemura, Ignace De Hingh and Onno Kranenburg.
  • Multicentre projects, international clinical trials and a proposed worldwide registry for diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.
  • Integration of basic and translational science with clinical practice, and direct contact between senior and early-career investigators.

Academic and surgical exchange with the BTCH team and in Harbin: joint operating sessions and shared techniques for the treatment of peritoneal surface malignancy. This link with Tsinghua is the foundation on which the IRCPSO involvement was built.
